Case Study
Modernize Pole Inspection Process
Background
Every distribution pole must be inspected periodically as one of the means to prevent fires. Inspectors must drive by each pole, write down their observations and flag poles that need repairs and other services.

Prior to this project, inspectors would print out huge maps to take in their trucks, and would write down their observations. Then they would spend time in office inputting their inspection info.

The Ask
SoCal Edison wished to transform their distribution pole inspection process by introducing a mobile application that inspectors could carry in their trucks. This new application would streamline inspections and eliminate the need for cumbersome paper maps and manual data entry.
Shadowing and Research
A key aspect of user-centered design is understanding what people do in their actual work environment. For this reason it was important to conduct in-depth research in the field with inspectors. In these ride-alongs I was able to observe their daily tasks, and gather firsthand insights. This experience allowed me to design solutions that truly met their needs and improved their workflow.

Wireframes and Functional Requirements
I directed our creative team in leading a series of design sessions where we gathered detailed functional requirements for all features and created low and high-fidelity wireframes and prototypes. These requirements were used by the product, engineering and QE team for build.

The Result
After extended research, I directed the design of the SoCal Edison Inspect App. This application was designed for use on tablets, which inspectors take on their daily routes. The app maps the location of all SoCal Edison distribution poles, enabling inspectors to complete all their tasks within the app itself.
Beyond simply mapping poles, the app also designates specific areas and poles within high fire zones, helping inspectors prioritize their work effectively.
Since inspectors often work in remote areas with little or no connectivity, the app also works asynchronously and any work performed by the inspectors synch when their connection is back up.
